City of San Diego Urban Forester Position Saved!
When the City of San Diego proposed eliminating the Urban Forester position as part of closing a nearly $180 million budget shortfall the SDRUFC and other organizations banded together to let City Council know this was not in the best interests of its citizens. Through a combination of phone calls, letter/e-mail caompaigns and appearances at council hearings, the council heard us and saved the position of the Urban Forester. This is a direct result of organizations coming together and fighting for what we know to be true - trees add value to our communities and pay us back in environmental benefits. To accomplish this arduous task they need someone dedicated to ensuring the City takes their interests into account in making decisions. Our thanks go out to SDRUFC council member and San Diego Urban Forester Drew Potocki for being there for us and our City's trees for the past 13 years and here's to at least that many more! Click here for an editorial on saving San Diego's Urban Forester position. Also here is an article written by council member Anne Fege and Community Forestry Advisory Board Member Tershia d'Elgin about the importance of trees and an Urban Forester.
Pest Alert - The Gold-Spotted Oak Borer
The GSOB attacks and kills coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia, canyon live oak, Q. chrysolepis, and California black oak, Q. kelloggii and is currently playing a major role in oak mortality in southern California. Infestation and mortality is currently centered around the southern California communities of Descanso, Pine Valley, and Julian. The USFS has also recently confirmed the presence of GSOB in Clairemont and La Jolla.
Do Not Move Firewood - Transporting firewood can introduce new insects and pathogens to and from our native forests. Help stop the spread of this devastating pest! The recent movement of GSOB into La Jolla and Clairemont (and perhaps the overall presence of the pest in the County) can be seen as a further demonstration of the need to not move fire wood from the eastern portions of the county. See don't move firewood.org for more info

Drought Alert - Yes - We've had rain. NO - WE ARE NOT OUT OF A DROUGHT! San Diego is still under Stage Two water restrictions. The SDRUFC has published information regarding water-wise tree care for our region. the rain should have given your trees enough water to soak their roots for the next couple of monhts. As we enter into summer though, your trees will require supplemental water again. SDRUFC has published a flyer outlining proper watering strategies for trees during drought conditions. Please click here to download the flyer.
