Building on the recommendations from the California Urban and Community Forest Summit, and funded through a contract with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, the California Urban Forests Council worked with urban forestry stakeholders in San Diego County to create the San Diego Regional Urban Forest Council in 2001. The SDRUFC is comprised of local government agencies, private organizations, non-profits, and individuals. They meet every two months to network, share information, and discuss projects that will improve and expand the urban and community forests in San Diego County. In January 2004 the SDRUFC voted to become a chapter of the California Urban Forests Council to become more connected with the statewide urban forestry community and expand their opportunities.
